About the programme

Sinology at Universität Hamburg is a Master of Arts that builds your Chinese language, subject and method skills and, above all, your ability to research independently. Hamburg has studied and taught Chinese culture for almost a century. A semester abroad at a Chinese or European partner university is part of the programme. You pick one of two profiles at the start: Culture and Society, working with Chinese sources from classical texts to the present alongside theories from cultural, social and historical studies; or Conceptual and Intellectual History, which is taught in English and German and applies the history of concepts and ideas to Chinese sources. You finish with a Master's thesis on a topic you choose. The programme lasts four semesters, and you can start in winter or summer. Graduates can work in research, international organisations, business, culture, publishing, journalism or consulting.
