About the programme

American Studies is an English-taught Master of Arts (M.A.) at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. It takes 4 semesters (120 ECTS), you can start in summer or winter, and admission is open. You study current topics such as migration, protest movements and climate change and their history, and look at the United States in constant interaction with other societies. Working with social and media history and its texts, you examine complex global questions, such as how populist discourse from the US affects other societies. You can set your own focus within this transnational, interdisciplinary programme and build skills in text and media analysis across literature, culture, history, politics and media studies. It suits you if you are fascinated by the US. Requirements include a Bachelor's in American Studies or a related field with at least 10 credits related to North America, and English at C1.

Prerequisites

1. The subject-specific admission requirement for the Master's degree program in American Studies is proof of a Bachelor's degree in American Studies or in another related subject (e.g. B.Ed. English, B.A. British Studies, B.A. British and American Studies, etc.) or an equivalent degree from a university in Germany or abroad. Of these, at least 10 credit points must be clearly acquired in American Studies. Proof is provided as part of the application in the form of an officially certified copy of the degree certificate including a meaningful and certified list of the courses attended (Diploma Supplements/Transcript).

2. It is required that students have very good active and passive English language skills (level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) that enable them to read English-language literature and to participate in courses in English (proof not required). This includes, in particular, the preparation of written coursework as well as examinations in English.

3. In deviation from the standard provision in § 2 (4) sentence 4 MAPO, if there are fewer than 10 credit points in the field of American Studies in the previous education at the time of application in accordance with (1) 1, admission may be granted under the condition that he or she participate in a mandatory counselling interview. In the consultation, which lasts at least 15 minutes, the special requirements required for this Master's degree program are discussed, as well as the subject-specific skills already acquired by the applicant in the field of American Studies. At the end of the interview, the applicant may be required to attend additional courses from the Bachelor's degree program in American Studies as a condition for admission to the Master's degree program. The additional courses to be attended should be defined in such a way that the coursework can be completed within one semester.

4. The mandatory counselling interview according to (1) 3 usually takes place 14 days before the start of the winter or summer semester. The invitation to this interview will be sent in writing and/or electronically at least 14 calendar days before the fixed date.

If the applicant does not appear on the specified date without sufficient excuse, the condition pursuant to (1) 3 shall be deemed not to have been met. If there is sufficient excuse, the applicant will be invited to a new appointment. In this case, admission may not take place until the next semester, subject to conditions.

Knowledge of another modern Romance foreign language (e.g. Spanish or French) is extremely helpful for your studies.
