About the programme
Multilingualism and Education (MOTION: Master of Multilingual Educational Linguistics) is a Master of Arts run jointly by Universität Hamburg's education faculty and its language, literature and media departments. It looks at multilingualism in cities from an interdisciplinary angle, building on Hamburg's long tradition of research in this field. Required modules cover language typology and structure, multilingualism with intercultural communication and education, and language acquisition, language education and language assessment; if you lack a background in linguistics or education, you take a foundation module. You then choose three of eight profile modules, such as migration and interculturality or language comparison, and practice-oriented modules give you direct insight into multilingual settings in schools and public institutions. It lasts four semesters, is taught in German and starts in winter. Graduates can work in education bodies, international organisations and companies, or go on to a doctorate.
