About the programme

History and Culture (Geschichts- und Kulturwissenschaften) at Justus Liebig University Giessen is a strongly research-oriented, multi-subject Master's of 4 semesters and 120 credit points. You combine one major subject worth 50 credit points with a minor worth 40, following set combination rules. Subjects come from the historical, philological and cultural fields, such as Protestant and Catholic Theology, History, Eastern European History, Classical Archaeology, Greek and Latin Philology, Art History, Art Education, Music and Philosophy. They can also be combined with German Studies, English, Romance and Slavic languages, Sociology, Political Science and Education. You can choose to study the minor at Bachelor's level. The programme is consecutive and needs a Bachelor's with a relevant historical or cultural subject profile.

  • The requirement for acceptance into the Master`s course is to have completed a Bachelor`s degree with a relevant subject profile depending on the favoured subjects
  • Additionally, some subjects require a proof of sufficient language knowledge and/or aptitude tests.
  • For the subjects certain study and language skills are required. These are published in the _Mitteilungen der Universität Gießen – MUG_ (official announcements of Justus Liebig University). Please also read the Studies Information (Studieninformationen) and if necessary, talk to the relevant faculty/department. Insofar as a minor subject from another Master`s course has been chosen in the MA course History and Culture, the study requirements which apply for this course of study are valid.

What to prepare for your application to History and Culture

Programme-specific documents

Your school-leaving certificate (this may in certain cases take the form of a listing of the subject grades achieved in your last year of school; if applicable, also an academic transcript and/or diploma from a university already attended) and a translation of these documents (into English or German).
