About the programme

African Studies: Critical Perspectives on Society, Politics, Culture at the University of Bayreuth is a four-semester Master of Arts worth 120 ECTS, taught in English and starting in the winter semester. It takes an interdisciplinary social science approach to Africa, looking critically at the social, political and cultural dynamics that shape the region, its history and its ties to a globalised world. The programme combines social and cultural anthropology, sociology, political science and religion, and you can specialise in one of these through a wide choice of Africa-related courses. You study diverse knowledge systems, key debates in African Studies and current developments on the continent, with a view from and with the Global South. You sharpen your analytical and empirical research skills. It suits graduates aiming for academic careers or for work in international cooperation, public and media relations, NGOs, international organisations or diplomacy.
