About the programme

American Studies is an English-taught Master's at Goethe University Frankfurt on the culture of the United States from colonial times to today. It has three linked areas. American literature and literary studies examines American texts in the widest sense and their social and cultural power. American culture and cultural studies analyses media such as images and film for their meanings and how they are received, and asks whether and how an American identity can be expressed. American history and society studies change in US society and politics, including political ideas, norms and values in social movements and military conflicts, through critical work with historical sources. Teaching is based on learning through research. The programme lasts four semesters and starts in winter. It prepares you for a doctorate and for work in publishing, media, politics and public relations.
