Prerequisites

admission requirements

  • The subject-specific entry requirement for the Master's degree program in English Literature and Culture is proof of a Bachelor's degree in English Literature and Culture or in another related subject (e.g. B.Ed. English, BA British Studies, BA British and American Studies, etc.) or an equivalent degree from a university in Germany or abroad. At least 10 of these credits must be clearly earned in the subject of English Literature and Culture. Proof is provided as part of the application in the form of an officially certified copy of the degree certificate including a meaningful and certified list of the American studies courses attended (diploma supplements/transcript).
  • It is assumed that students have very good active and passive English language skills (level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), which enable them to read English-language specialist literature and to attend courses in English (proof not required). This includes in particular the completion of written coursework and examinations in English.
  • Deviating from the standard regulation in Section 2 Paragraph 4 Sentence 4 MAPO, if fewer than 10 credit points in the area of English Literature and Culture are present in the previous education at the time of application in accordance with (1)1, admission can be granted on the condition that you attend a compulsory consultation. In the consultation, which will last at least 15 minutes, the special requirements for this Master's degree program and the subject-specific skills already acquired by the applicant in the area of English studies will be discussed. At the end of the interview, the applicant may be required to attend additional courses from the Bachelor's degree program in English Literature and Culture as a condition for admission to the Master's degree program. The additional courses to be attended should be defined in such a way that the academic achievements can be achieved within one semester.
  • The mandatory consultation pursuant to (1)3 usually takes place 14 days before the start of the winter or summer semester. The invitation to this consultation is sent in writing and/or electronically at least 14 calendar days before the set date. If the applicant does not appear at the set appointment without sufficient excuse, the requirement pursuant to (1)3 is deemed not to have been fulfilled. If sufficient excuse is given, the applicant will be invited to a new appointment. In this case, admission may only take place in the next semester under certain conditions. The consultation is conducted by two authorized examiners pursuant to Section 8 Paragraph 2 or one authorized examiner in the presence of an expert assessor. A record must be made of the consultation. It must include:
  • a) the names of the authorized examiners,
  • b) the name of the applicant,
  • c) the date and start and end of the consultation,
  • d) the subject and result of the consultation,
  • e) the decision on further conditions for admission.
  • The minutes must be signed by the authorized examiners and deposited with the responsible examination board.
  • DSH exemption: Applicants who have not acquired their study qualification at a German-speaking institution do not have to prove their German language skills in accordance with the “German Language Examination for University Access for Foreign Students (DSH)” before starting their studies. Proof of German language skills appears inappropriate, as the “Master English Literature and Culture” course is offered entirely in English.
  • All study and examination achievements can only be recognized once in a degree program. Multiple recognition of study and examination achievements is therefore not possible.
