About the programme
Sociolinguistics and Multilingualism (SoMu) is an English-taught international Master of Arts (M.A.) run by Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, Lithuania. It takes 4 semesters (120 ECTS), starts in the winter semester, and you apply through Vytautas Magnus University. You are enrolled at both universities and earn a joint degree, with a compulsory mobility semester at your choice of Stockholm University or the University of Tartu. You study how language changes and varies and how this affects the society that speaks it, with a special focus on multilingualism in Europe and the Nordic and Baltic region. Along the way you learn new languages, build intercultural communication skills and develop your own research projects. Requirements include a Bachelor's in the humanities or social sciences with at least 30 credits in linguistics or philology, English at B2, and a successful aptitude interview at Vytautas Magnus University.
