About the programme

International War Studies is an English-language MA double degree run by the University of Potsdam and University College Dublin. You spend the first year in Potsdam and the second in Dublin, and after your MA thesis in Dublin you receive two Master's degrees. It takes 4 semesters and 120 credit points and starts in the winter semester. The programme looks at the causes, dynamics and contexts of violent conflict at national and international level, with military history, military sociology and security policy at its core, plus topics such as the cultural history of violence, the law of armed conflict, intelligence studies and strategic studies. It is aimed mainly at international applicants. It suits graduates in a relevant field such as history, political science or sociology.

Prerequisites

The foundation of your application and your acceptance into the master’s program is a strong interest in political, social and historical events.

Applying for a master’s degree requires that you hold an undergraduate degree, such as a bachelor’s degree. Your undergraduate degree must be in a field relevant to International War Studies, such as history, political science, sociology or a related subject. Proof of 40 credit points in one of these subject areas is sufficient. If your transcript comes from a system that does not use credit points, then the joint Examining Board will make a decision about the equivalence of academic performance. Because the master’s degree program is also conducted in English, we require proof of English language skills that correspond at least to Level C 1 of the Common European Framework for Languages. German language skills are not required.

You can read more about the subject-specific admission requirements in the respective Admission Regulations (opens in a new tab).

Some courses may be taken in German.

Applicants need an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university. Students will have a minimum qualification of 2.1 in a relevant subject or an equivalent UCD GPA of 3.08. For non-English speakers evidence of language proficiency is required, for example IELTS of 6.5 overall or equivalent in TOEFL with no band lower than 6.0. Students who achieve an IELTS of 6.0 with no band lower than 5.5 will need to attend a pre-sessional language course. Students will be selected by a joint board composed of senior academics from UCD and Potsdam.
