About the programme

Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archaeology (Vor- und Frühgeschichtliche Archäologie) is a research-oriented Master of Arts at Universität Hamburg. It covers prehistory, from times with no written records, and early history, where written sources are compared with archaeological finds, as well as the archaeology of the Middle Ages and early modern period. The subject sits between the humanities and the natural sciences, and Hamburg's profile stresses cultural and social questions and interdisciplinary work with geophysical and scientific methods. Practical project and group work matter a lot, and the institute aims for close cooperation with nearby museums and heritage offices. Required modules cover practice (internship, excursion, tutoring), a project, a research workshop and your thesis. It lasts four semesters, is taught in German, and you can start in winter or summer. Graduates can work in research, museums, heritage protection and archaeological fieldwork.
