About the programme

Medieval Studies (Mittelalter-Studien) is an interdisciplinary Master of Arts at Universität Hamburg. It gives you a broad understanding of the Middle Ages and of how different subjects study the period, with a focus on why the medieval era still matters for society today. In the profile area you specialise in two of three subjects: older German literature, medieval history and medieval art history. In the complementary area you add one more subject related to the Middle Ages, such as historical musicology, church history or early archaeology. The final semester covers your Master's thesis and two oral exams. The programme lasts four semesters, is taught in German, and you can start in winter or summer. Graduates can go into research and teaching, education, arts and culture management, public relations or journalism.
