About the programme
History, Languages and Cultures of the Near East is a research-oriented Master of Arts at Universität Hamburg that also builds practical, career-related knowledge. At the start you choose one profile: Iranian Studies, Islamic Studies or Turkology. Each profile has its own subject modules, such as Ottoman history and source studies in Turkology, and a shared module covers research approaches in international Oriental studies. You also train the matching language: Persian, Arabic or Turkish. The Master's thesis comes in the fourth semester of the four-semester programme. Teaching is in German, and you can start in winter or summer. Graduates can work in research institutions, media, policy advice, the diplomatic service, international development cooperation, NGOs, cultural organisations, public administration, publishing and libraries.
