About the programme
The History Master of Arts at Universität Hamburg is a research-oriented programme that deepens your knowledge across periods, regions and fields of history. It covers ancient, medieval and modern history, and German, European and global history, so you can build your own study and research focus. Unlike a Bachelor's, the emphasis is on working out and developing current research questions yourself. In the first year you take main modules in two specialisations plus modules on historiography and on methods and theory; in the second year you prepare and write your thesis in one of them. The subject area is 105 credit points with 15 more in free electives. Teaching is in German, it lasts four semesters, and you can start in winter or summer. Graduates can work in research, education, archives, museums, culture, publishing and journalism.
