About the programme
Historical Musicology is a research-oriented Master of Arts at Universität Hamburg that deepens your knowledge of European and Western music history and trains you to handle music-historical questions in a scholarly way. You get a structured overview of the whole of music history and can build special expertise in one of four periods: the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the early modern period, the Classical era and 19th century, or modern and postmodern music. You can also study without a focus. Required modules cover the discipline and its links to other fields, the practice of historical musicology, and general music history. The programme lasts four semesters, is taught in German, and you can start in winter or summer. Graduates can work in research, archives, libraries, museums, music schools, opera and orchestras, media, concert agencies or cultural management.
