About the programme
Archaeology and Cultural History of the Ancient Mediterranean is a Master of Arts at Universität Hamburg with a social-anthropological and cultural-history approach. It studies the material remains of antiquity from the Minoan and Mycenaean era to late antiquity and early Christianity in the 6th century AD, with a focus on analysing ancient life and imagery. Hamburg archaeology is interdisciplinary and focuses on fieldwork, including survey, research diving and archaeometry. Required modules cover theory and method, an excursion and a project; you also choose three modules from topics such as settlement and economy, social and political organisation, media and communication, cult and religion, and cultural exchange. By arrangement, the third semester can be spent abroad. It lasts four semesters, is taught in German, and you can start in winter or summer. Graduates can go into research, museums, journalism or culture.
