About the programme
Manuscript Cultures is a one-year, English-taught Master of Arts at Universität Hamburg worth 60 credit points. It covers the central topics of manuscript research together with practical skills. You learn to handle manuscripts independently and analytically, to study their texts, images, notes and diagrams from a cultural point of view, and to analyse their materials scientifically. The programme spans a broad range of manuscript cultures, especially in Asia, Africa and Europe. Modules cover cultural studies of manuscripts, scientific material analysis, free electives, and a final module with your thesis. It starts in winter. As a manuscript specialist you can work in research institutes and universities, or in archives, museums and cultural heritage institutions around the world, cataloguing, preserving and exhibiting collections.
