About the programme

Geschichte (History) is a research-oriented, German-taught Master of Arts at the University of Freiburg over 4 semesters with 120 credits, with entry in winter or summer. It covers history from antiquity to the present, building expertise across periods while you specialise in one epoch for your Master's thesis. The programme combines comparison across periods, a range of methods and a broad interdisciplinary curriculum, including a master seminar co-taught by two instructors and small, intensive courses with close guidance. Graduates can do independent research and apply their expertise in academia, teaching, archives or cultural institutions. You need German at C1, English at B2, and another modern language at B1 or Latin or Greek.

Prerequisites

a first degree with an average grade of at least 2.4 from a German university in a Bachelor's program in history or in an equivalent program of at least three years at a German or foreign university that meets the qualifying requirements specified in paragraph 2, and

2. has knowledge of the German language that corresponds to at least level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, as well as knowledge of English that corresponds to at least level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and

3. has knowledge of another modern foreign language that corresponds to at least level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, or has acquired the Latinum or the Graecum, or has equivalent knowledge of Latin or Greek.
