About the programme

Industrial Biotechnology at TUM in Garching is a full-time Master of Science over four semesters with 120 ECTS, with a start in the winter or the summer semester. Teaching is usually in German, with some courses possibly in English. Industrial or white biotechnology uses microorganisms and enzymes as biocatalysts to produce substances, from special and fine chemicals and food additives to high-volume chemicals and fuels, using renewable resources. The programme combines the biosciences, including molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology and bioinformatics, with (bio)process engineering and technical chemistry, so that new biocatalysts can be turned into efficient production processes on an industrial scale. A special feature of this non-consecutive Master's is that graduates of Bachelor's programmes in both the biosciences and engineering can be admitted. Admission is through an aptitude assessment.
