About the programme
The M.Sc. Mathematics at RWTH Aachen University is an academic, research-oriented programme over 4 semesters with 120 credits, open without a numerus clausus and starting in winter or summer. It is taught in German or English, and you can study it entirely in English by choosing physics, applied geophysics or computer science as your English-taught application subject. You take many elective modules from almost every area of mathematics, combining pure and applied mathematics, and specialise in one concentration area, where you usually write your thesis. Alongside, you study an application subject such as physics, computer science, business administration or economics, and the Master's thesis can be done in cooperation with it. It suits mathematics graduates who enjoy abstract and structural thinking.

(10a) For Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs that cannot be successfully completed without proficiency in another foreign language, applicants must demonstrate the required level of proficiency. A maximum of B2 Level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) may be stipulated. Modern foreign languages courses started at “Sekundarstufe I” and continued are considered as being concluded at B2 Level, regardless of whether they were taken as regular “Grundkurs” or major “Leistungskurs” courses (with the exception of Chinese and Japanese). If a test is required to prove an applicant’s language proficiency, this must be regulated in the course of study-specific Examination Regulations.
(11) Course of study-specific Examination Regulations may require proof of practical professional experience.
(12) Assessment of whether the admission requirements are met is the responsibility of the relevant Examination Board in consultation with the Registrar’s Office. In the case of applications by international students, the decision is made in consultation with the Division of Admissions and Social Affairs.
(13) Enrollment shall be refused if an applicant has ultimately failed an exam or assignment in the chosen degree program required by the Examination Regulations at a university within the scope of application of Basic Law. Enrollment shall also be refused if the applicant has ultimately failed an exam in another related course of study, in which the exam is required by the Examination Regulations, if this exam is also required in the selected course of study. Related content means a similarity of at least 60% of the content of the course to be studied. Applicants who have ultimately failed a Bachelor’s or Master’s course of study at RWTH or at another university in the scope of application of the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany or who cannot be admitted to the final examination of this course must apply for review of the admission requirements with the responsible local Examination Board when enrolling or transferring, in order to be able to enroll or transfer (certificate of good standing).
