applicants whose first degree course was not taken at a University in a country of the European Union have to provide verification of their expertise in the form of "Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Scores" in physics or mathematics;

If available, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Scores in physics if your previous degree was not completed at a university in the European Union. This may help us gauge your previous experience, but we will review your application also without GRE scores.

Prerequisites

The basis for admission to the Master's course is proof of a higher education entrance qualification and a professional University qualification from a course in physics or astrophysics lasting at least six semesters or another similar science subject. Applications to our program can be made during your last two semesters of Bachelor studies or after completion of your Bachelor studies. Previous training in theoretical mechanics, theoretical quantum mechanics, theoretical electrodynamics, theoretical thermodynamics and statistics as well as a solid education in mathematics are prerequisites for a successful application.

Aptitude Test

English language skills B2

The application for the MSc Astrophysics at LMU consists of two elements:

1. Application to the MSc Astrophysics Selection Committee of the Faculty of Physics (see further instructions below).

2. If you are neither a German citizen nor a "Bildungsinländer" (see this link (opens in a new tab) for a definition of Bildungsinländer), then also submit an application to the LMU International Office. This should be done in parallel to the selection process, i.e. before the deadlines mentioned below, in order to avoid delays. Please follow the steps outlined by the International Office (opens in a new tab).

Note that to be accepted into the MSc Astrophysics program you need to be accepted by i) the MSc Astrophysics Selection Committee of the Faculty of Physics and – if you are a student who does not qualify as "Bildungsinländer" – by ii) the LMU International Office.

Enrolling in the MSc Astrophysics program requires a Bachelor's degree in physics, astrophysics or another similar science subject.

Previous training in theoretical physics (mechanics, quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, and thermodynamics and statistics), a solid education in mathematics, and some research experience (demonstrated with, e.g., a Bachelor thesis project) are prerequisites for a successful application. In general, students with a Bachelor degree in Engineering do not meet the requirements of our program.

You may only apply twice.
