About the programme

Modern Societies and Cultures at Justus Liebig University Giessen is a research-oriented MA of 4 semesters and 120 credit points that responds to sociological diagnoses of today's social challenges. Teaching is in German and English. Conflicts in contemporary societies are increasingly expressed in cultural terms, such as religion, lifestyle or milieu, and culture can act as a norm, an object of conflict and a resource. You build sociological reflection and the ability to articulate the cultural dimension of social problems through active teaching and cooperation with other JLU institutes. The programme has nine modules: six mandatory ones, including three core modules, two theory and practice modules over the first two semesters and the thesis module, plus three elective cooperation modules in the second and third semesters, where you attend classes at partner institutes.
