About the programme

Altertumswissenschaften (Ancient Civilization Studies) is a research-oriented, German-taught Master of Arts at the University of Freiburg over 4 semesters with 120 credits, with entry in the winter or summer semester. It deepens the study of ancient cultures through archaeology, history and philology, combining texts, languages and material evidence. You can specialise regionally, from the Ancient Near East to Graeco-Roman antiquity and prehistoric Europe, working with inscriptions, papyri, coins and artefacts, and an optional binational EUCOR track adds further perspectives. Graduates are prepared for doctoral study, research and careers in culture, education, museums and research management. You need German at C1 and Latin, Greek or an ancient Oriental language, plus a relevant modern language at B2, or French at B2 for the EUCOR track.
