About the programme

Matter to Life is a joint Master of Science programme of Heidelberg University and the University of Göttingen and part of the Max Planck School Matter to Life. It runs for four semesters in English and starts in the winter semester only. The Heidelberg courses focus on molecular systems chemistry and engineering, combining chemistry with physics, molecular systems, engineering and the biosciences. In the first semester you share core courses with students from both universities, such as Physics of Complex Systems, Bioengineering and Synthetic Biology, and Biophysics and Physical Chemistry of Life. In the second semester you choose topics from the module handbook. The second year is practical work in the faculty's labs and research groups, with lab rotations across two groups and then a supervised master's thesis. The programme prepares you for a research career and a doctorate.
