About the programme
This Master of Science at Universität Hamburg was renamed for Winter 2026/27 from Nanoscience to Physics and Chemistry of Nanomaterials. It is an interdisciplinary programme run by the chemistry and physics departments, and it builds on the methods from your Bachelor's with a focus on nanoanalytics, nanomaterials, nanostructuring methods, nanobiotechnology and technical applications. It has three phases: a foundation phase with required modules in solid state physics, nanostructure physics, physical chemistry and materials chemistry; an advanced phase with electives linked to the departments' research areas; and a research phase with a project study and your thesis. The programme lasts four semesters, is taught in German, and you can start in winter or summer. Graduates can work in research and teaching, or in industrial research in areas such as the automotive, communications, energy, chemical and pharmaceutical industries.

- Bachelor's degree certificate or provisional transcript of records
If you are still studying at the time of application and cannot provide a final certificate with a grade, please submit a current transcript of records with a provisional average grade. The final certificate must be submitted by the end of the first semester of your Master's program. At least 150 credit points must be demonstrated at the time of application, otherwise a realistic start to studies or the timely submission of the bachelor's degree certificate cannot be expected.
- If it is not stated in your certificate, please attach a list of all courses and modules completed or examinations taken to date, often referred to as a transcript of records or "extract from the examination file."
- Applicants currently enrolled in the bachelor's program in Nanoscience at the University of Hamburg do not require a transcript of records. The grades and credit points at the time of application will be transferred from STiNE.
- Copy of your university entrance qualification (usually Abitur)
- A tabular CV, including any certificates and diplomas you have earned. (The following points should be included in your CV: Personal information, educational background, professional training, studies, professional career, professional development, internships, international experience or travel, language skills, computer skills, activities, other: description of qualifications and activities that do not fall under any of the above points, e.g., participation in (scientific) competitions, awards, skills)
- Other Qualifications
Evidence of the other qualifications listed in your CV (e.g., professional history, professional development, internships, international experience or travel, language skills, computer skills, other activities).
- Letter of Motivation
in English, in which you explain your chosen degree program and university, as well as your academic goals. If you did not obtain your Abitur from a German-speaking school, you can also submit this in German.
