About the programme
Advanced Materials at Justus Liebig University Giessen is a research-oriented Master's of 4 semesters and 120 credit points that you can study in German, with a few English modules, or entirely in English. Double degrees are possible with Osaka University and Kansai University in Japan and the University of Padua in Italy. Advanced materials are functional materials whose properties are tailored for uses in medicine, mobility, communication, energy supply and aerospace, such as better batteries, more efficient solar cell coatings or implants the body accepts. Developing them needs interdisciplinary knowledge of chemistry and physics. In the first two semesters you take four basic materials science modules, choose a subject specialisation from the first semester, and add compulsory electives. You gain in-depth lab skills and work independently on smaller research projects, including a research module in the third semester.
Specialization
From the first semester onwards, students choose a subject specialisation, such as Electrochemical materials research, High-performance materials, materials analysis, Theoretical materials research, Sustainable inorganic materials, Organic Materials Synthesis.
