About the programme
The international MA in Social and Cultural Anthropology (Ethnologie) at Universität Hamburg explains social questions through ethnographic field research and comparison across cultures. You engage with issues such as migration, urban and rural change, consumption, governance, family change, natural resource management and climate change in regions across the world. The programme is built on learning through research. In semester one you study current theories and research design, in semester two you start your own project and a field research exercise, in semester three you do in-depth fieldwork abroad or work on comparative cultural theory, and in semester four you write your thesis. It lasts four semesters, is taught in German and English, and starts in winter. It suits graduates with a first degree in social and cultural anthropology.
