About the programme
Empirical Cultural Studies (Empirische Kulturwissenschaft) is a research-oriented Master of Arts at Universität Hamburg. The subject analyses everyday cultural practices in their historical and social dimensions, with the aim of understanding present-day societies. Following the idea of learning through research, a two-semester research seminar links you to ongoing projects at the institute, with chances to gain experience with partners in Germany and abroad. You choose a focus: City and Urbanity, or Technicity and Mediality. The programme lasts four semesters, is taught in German and starts in winter only. It prepares you for research and a doctorate, and for work in exhibitions, media and museums, libraries and archives, adult education, cultural offices, travel companies or consulting.
Specialization
Students also have the opportunity to choose between the two thematic focuses "City and Urbanity" and "Technicity and Mediality."
