About the programme

Bioinformatics and Systems Biology at Justus Liebig University Giessen is a consecutive Master's of 4 semesters and 120 credit points, developed jointly by JLU and the University of Applied Sciences Central Hesse (THM). It is aimed at graduates in computer science, bioinformatics or biology; other degrees, such as chemistry, food chemistry, medical informatics, medicine or mathematics, can be recognised on request with at least 18 credit points in mathematics/statistics, biology and/or computer science. The first two semesters are course semesters, designed so you can reach your goals largely independently of your background in life sciences or computer science, starting with core areas such as bioinformatics algorithms, big data, machine learning and molecular systems biology. The third and fourth semesters are research semesters in working groups. An internship abroad of up to 12 credit points is possible and desired, and you can join strategic research projects of JLU and THM.

Entrance requirements

The entry prerequisite for the Master’s degree course is a relevant Bachelor`s degree.

On request, other degrees can be recognised, provided that the attainment of at least 18 credit points in mathematics/statistics, biology and/or computer science can be proven. After that there will be an individual examination in each case.
