About the programme

Applied Theatre Science at Justus Liebig University Giessen is a consecutive Master's of 4 semesters and 120 credit points that deepens and extends both the theory of theatre and the practice of the performative arts. In the second year you focus either on artistic practice, with the study focus Practice of Performative Arts, leaning towards direction and performance art, or on theory, with the focus Theory and Aesthetics of Performative Arts, leaning towards dramaturgy, journalistic or editorial work and research. Because theory and practice are closely linked in both tracks, your future work may sit in either field or a mix of both. The programme also includes two modules from participating subjects, an assistantship in theatre or media, and a Master's thesis that can be practical-artistic, such as a production, or theoretical-scientific.

  • BA (or equivalent degree) with a relevant subject profile and an artistic aptitude test (portfolio of own art work, BA thesis or equivalent scientific work, oral examination).

Language requirements (starting from winter semester 2025/26)

Admission to the Master's degree programme in Applied Theatre Studies requires proof of language proficiency in English at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, in particular through

1. school certificate (proof of English as a (foreign) language for at least 6 years of learning up to the degree entitling the applicant to university admission);

2. language test IELTS: min. Grade 5.5;

3. language test TOEFL (iBT, 0-120 points): min. 72 points;

4. TOEFL language test (ITP Level 1, 310-677 points): min. 543 points;

5. language test TOEFL (pBT, 310-677 points): min. 543 points;

6. language test PTE Academic (10-90 points): min. 59 points;

7. language test TOEIC (10-990 points): min. 785 points;

8. telc language test: B2 certificate;

9. language test UNIcert II certificate;

10. language test Cambridge IGCSE: B2 certificate.

If the proof according to sentence 1 is not provided at the time of enrolment, enrolment will take place in accordance with Section 60 (4) sentence 2 of the Hessian Higher Education Act of 14 December 2021 (HessHG) subject to proof being provided by the end of the 2nd semester. If the required language skills are not proven before the end of the 2nd subject-related semester, enrolment for the Bachelor's degree programme ATW expires at the end of the 2nd subject-related semester.

The Examination Board decides on the recognition of foreign language requirements for applicants who have a higher education entrance qualification obtained abroad or a Bachelor's or equivalent degree.

What to prepare for your application to Applied Theatre Science

Programme-specific documents

Your school-leaving certificate (this may in certain cases take the form of a listing of the subject grades achieved in your last year of school; if applicable, also an academic transcript and/or diploma from a university already attended) and a translation of these documents (into English or German). Translations are only accepted from accredited translators who are authorized to issue official translations in their respective home country. We accept documents in German and English.

If you do not yet have sufficient German language skills to apply, please apply for the "Deutschkurs/German language course" to take part in an intensive German language course to prepare you for your studies at JLU.
