About the programme

Soft Matter and Materials is an English-taught Master of Science (M.Sc.) at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, run with the Technical University of Darmstadt and the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research. It takes 4 semesters (120 ECTS), you can start in summer or winter, and admission is open. The programme combines physics and chemistry around colloids, polymers and amphiphiles, with questions such as how complex structures form in living organisms, how drug delivery can be improved, and what fully recyclable plastics could look like. You build a solid base in macromolecular chemistry, physical chemistry of polymers, and experimental and theoretical physics, and can join Max Planck courses on colloid and interface chemistry. You spend semesters in both Mainz and Darmstadt, with links to life sciences or engineering. Requirements include a Bachelor's in chemistry, chemical engineering, physics or materials science, set lab and thermodynamics credits, and English at B2.
