About the programme
Systematic Musicology is a Master of Arts at Universität Hamburg that studies the physical, biological, psychological, cultural and social foundations of music. Using empirical and experimental methods, it asks how measurable sound is received by the ear, processed by the brain and turned into perception, and goes on to how music is received and judged in its social and cultural context. It also covers today's popular music, its media and production. Required modules are advanced musical acoustics and advanced music psychology, and you can focus on either a science and music theory track, with signal processing and neuromusicology, or a social and cultural track, with music production, media and markets, comparative musicology and jazz and popular music research. The programme lasts four semesters, is taught in German and starts in winter or summer.
