About the programme
Sign Languages (Gebärdensprachen) is a Master of Arts at Universität Hamburg that gives you detailed linguistic knowledge of the sign languages of deaf people, especially German Sign Language, along with cultural questions linked to them. You learn to describe sign language phenomena in detail, use empirical methods and judge theories critically. Required modules include a sign language structure course, the evolution of communication and origin of language, cultural studies, sign language communities and empirical sign language linguistics, and a profile area lets you do your own guided research in this young discipline. The programme lasts four semesters, is taught in German and English, and you can start in winter or summer. It aims to prepare you for a doctorate, and also for work in education, administration, journalism, publishing, early intervention, social institutions or accessible IT.
