About the programme

The Art History Master of Arts at Universität Hamburg studies how works of art come about, what makes them distinct, and what they do, across architecture, sculpture, painting, graphic art and applied arts as well as design, photography and audiovisual media. You build broad knowledge of the history and theory of the visual arts and the methods to handle different periods and genres. Research approaches include political iconography, material iconography, reception aesthetics and the history of science. In semesters one to three you take five modules from areas such as media and genres, epochs, exchange and transfer, and iconography, plus electives; the fourth semester is for your thesis. Teaching is in German, the programme lasts four semesters, and you can start in winter or summer. Graduates can work in research, museums, heritage conservation, the art trade, galleries and art criticism.
