About the programme

The master's programme in Art History (Kunstgeschichte) at the University of Greifswald is taught mainly in German, lasts four semesters and can start in the winter or summer semester. It is based at the Caspar-David-Friedrich-Institute, named after the Romantic painter who was born and grew up in Greifswald, which brings art history and fine art together under one roof. The programme focuses on the production, function, effect and cultural context of works of art from the early Middle Ages to the present, deepening existing knowledge and taking up current research and debates. Teaching staff put students in contact with original buildings and artworks, so excursions in Germany and abroad and visits to museums and studios are a fixed part of the course. One focus in teaching and research is the Baltic Sea region. A complementary area with courses from across the Faculty of Arts adds an interdisciplinary element.
