About the programme
Bioinformatics is a Master of Science offered by TUM together with Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich (LMU), with Munich and Garching as its locations. German is the required language for admission. It runs full-time for four semesters with 120 ECTS, you can start in the winter or the summer semester, and you apply via LMU. Bioinformatics combines informatics, mathematics and statistics with the life sciences, such as biology, chemistry, pharmacy, medicine, biotechnology and food technology. The programme gives you great freedom to specialise. In the first three semesters the focus is on electives from all areas of study, chosen to match your interests, alongside a Master's internship, and the Master's thesis in the fourth semester usually ties into ongoing research. Graduates can move into research through a doctorate or develop bioinformatics applications in industry, where the field is seen as a key technology.
