About the programme

Geophysics is a research-oriented Master of Science offered jointly by TUM and LMU in Munich, running full-time for four semesters with 120 ECTS and starting in the winter semester (October). English is the required language, and you apply via LMU. Geophysics sits between the geosciences and physics: it maps geological structures from local to global scales, mainly with seismic, gravimetric and magnetic measurements, and interprets them using the laws of physics, with numerical simulation playing a growing role. Field research and physical-mathematical analysis carry equal weight. The programme teaches advanced concepts, theories and methods from geodynamics, seismology and geomagnetics, so you gain a systematic understanding of geophysical phenomena. Besides research and teaching, graduates work in the public and private sectors, for example in environmental organisations, construction or insurance companies, in geodata analysis or climate research.
