About the programme

Applied Chemistry is a full-time MSc at TH Köln's Leverkusen Campus. It takes 3 semesters and 90 ECTS, is taught in German and English, and starts in the summer or winter semester. The programme prepares you for independent work in chemistry research, chemical development and production. You build professional skills in three areas: Modern Chemical Technologies, Green Chemistry and Materials Chemistry. Practice-oriented learning helps you develop new concepts, methods, compounds and materials, as well as prototypes and products at lab, plant or production scale, even in unfamiliar situations. Alongside subject knowledge, the programme strengthens your personal and methodological skills and your ability to focus on projects and processes.

Prerequisites

Admission requirements

university degree

The prerequisite for admission to the course is the successful completion of a university degree in chemistry, technical chemistry, applied chemistry or another relevant course with the minimum degree of “Bachelor of Science” or “Bachelor of Engineering” with a scope of at least 210 credit points according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) and an overall grade of at least 2.5 .

You can apply even if you haven't yet completed your studies but expect to complete them before starting your master's program.

Any degree program that provides at least 60 credit points of chemistry-related skills, excluding practical work, is eligible.

If the above requirements are not fully met, admission can only be granted on the condition that missing prior knowledge can be proven by successfully passing certain examinations from Bachelor's degree programs at the latest before admission to the Master's thesis .

If more than 30 credit points are missing to fulfill the requirements, admission is not possible.

Applicants who have not yet completed their relevant studies can take part in the selection process if they can prove at the time of application that:

- they are still missing a maximum of 30 credit points to obtain their degree (i.e. at least 150 of 180 credit points for 6-semester degree programs or 180 of 210 credit points for 7-semester degree programs have already been achieved).

In these cases, enrollment is subject to the condition that successful completion with a minimum grade of 2.5 is proven by the end of the re-registration deadline for the 2nd semester; otherwise, the student will be exmatriculated.

Applicants with foreign certificates please note the information on applications (opens in a new tab) and German language skills. (opens in a new tab)

- TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT at home (80 points)

- IELTS (6.5 points)

- Proof of level B2 (CEF) in the Abitur certificate

- Equivalent language certificate

The examination board may accept other evidence as equivalent.

Proof of English proficiency must be provided at the time of application. Prospective students who do not yet have the required proof must register for an official English language test. The test results must be submitted no later than the beginning of the first semester .
