About the programme
Biomedical Chemistry is a Master of Science (M.Sc.) at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, taught mostly in English with some German. It takes 4 semesters (120 ECTS), you can start in summer or winter, and admission is open. The programme bridges biology, chemistry and medicine so you can research the molecular causes of disease and help develop diagnostics and active ingredients. You get a solid grounding in chemistry and biochemistry, plus pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry and pharmacology, and can add toxicology, immunology or radiopharmaceutical chemistry. Compared with biochemists, you gain deeper insight into how active ingredients are made and what they must do. You can study fully in English, but some electives are only in German, so German skills are recommended. Most graduates go on to a doctorate. Requirements include a Bachelor's in biomedical chemistry or a closely related degree and English at B2.

Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in biomedical chemistry. Credits and coursework earned in another first degree program may also be taken into account.
If previous credits and coursework differ to a great degree, you may be admitted to the program under certain conditions in order to catch up on 12 credits points from the bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Chemistry. In this case, enrollment is granted under the condition that these credits are achieved within the first year of study. For repeat examinations, the examination committee may extend this deadline by one semester. If proof is not provided to the examination committee in due time, students are generally not entitled to continue their studies.
