About the programme

Mediating Culture (Kulturvermittlung) at Bielefeld University is an interdisciplinary four-semester Master of Arts worth 120 credit points, starting in the winter semester. It looks mainly at cultural mediation outside schools and combines a solid academic and theoretical base with a strong practical side. The programme prepares you for educational work at cultural institutions such as cultural offices, museums, theatres, festivals, concert halls, cultural associations and social institutions. Because the field overlaps with education, dramaturgy, artistic planning, cultural management, audience development and marketing, you build knowledge of cultural studies and theory. Depending on your focus, you gain practice in artistic practice in fine art, music, theatre, dance and performance, or literature and film, and you study current forms and methods of mediation. Project and self-management skills help you plan, run and evaluate projects on your own. It suits graduates who want to work in cultural education.
