About the programme
Digital Media is a Master of Arts offered jointly by the University of the Arts Bremen (HfK) and the University of Bremen, between media design at HfK and media informatics at the University of Bremen, drawing on art, design, theory and new technology. At HfK the aim is to train designers who take both an experimental, artistic approach and an applied, function-oriented approach to new technologies, can reflect on them and their cultural, social, historical and ethical conditions, and express their expertise creatively. The programme is openly structured: introductory and project preparation courses in the first two semesters, a master's project in the third, and the thesis in the fourth, so two large free projects can build on each other or explore different subjects. It is taught in English, full time, with 120 ECTS over four semesters, starting on 1 October each winter semester.

Prerequisites
The prerequisite for admission to the master's programme is a bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.Sc.) in an area relevant to digital media (e.g. computer science, systems engineering, design, fine arts, media art, architecture) or an equivalent degree. It is possible to apply for the master’s programme if this qualifying degree is in progress and will be issued before the first of October of the same year. In addition, proof must be provided that at least 150 ECTS have been acquired in this degree program.
In order to check whether the previous degree(s) qualify for admission to the master's degree programme, we rely on the official German database Anabin. If the previous qualification cannot be found there, we contact the German Central Office for Foreign Education.
Please note that in rare cases the title B.Sc. or B.A. alone is not sufficient for admission, especially not a mere two-year bachelor's degree. Please do not forget to add information about your previous degree programme (e.g. a web address).
Certificate of language skills / Certificate English Language Proficiency (opens in a new tab)
For admission you must demonstrate a good knowledge of the English language with one of the following certificates:
- C1 Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
- TOEFL Internet-based >= 95 Points
- IELTS Band 7, Cambridge CAE/BECH, US Unicert III or similar (you may find the complete list at the website of the language center of universities in Bremen (opens in a new tab) in the “English” register)
Your certificate must be presented upon enrolment. To ensure that your language certificate arrives on time, do not ask TOEFL or other test providers to send it directly to us. Instead, upload a scan of the certificate to the application portals. You will later be asked to provide the original or a certified copy. The need to present this certificate can be waived if the previous degree that qualifies you for this master's programme was taught in English or if the school education that qualifies you for university entrance was in English. In this case, please note this information in the corresponding comment field of the application portal and provide evidence that the lessons actually took place in English, if this is not a given (e.g. when studying at regular universities in Australia, New Zealand, the USA or in Great Britain).
The portfolio can contain any artistic, design, academic, scientific or theoretical work as well as professional work and achievements that reflect your interests, your (artistic) position, your experiences, your knowledge and skills and any other aspects that you think we should take into account.
The choice of formats is free. There is also no set number of works or projects that must be included, although a standard number of 10–20 works has proven to be sufficient.
The portfolio can be uploaded to the application portal (e.g. as a PDF), sent by mail (avoid mailing original, non-digital artworks; use digital replicas instead), or as a link to a personal website, a private upload area or a repository. Due to the limited space in the application portals, it is advisable to use the latter option.
