About the programme

Mathematical Modeling, Simulation and Optimization at the University of Koblenz is a two-year Master of Science taught in English, on campus, with starts in the winter or the summer semester. In the first two semesters you take courses in applied mathematics, physics and computer science needed for modelling, simulating and optimising complex systems, such as applied differential equations, numerics of partial differential equations and applied optimisation. In the third semester you focus on an area of your choice through electives such as solid state physics, machine learning, web science or network theory. A project seminar on current research topics, alone or in small groups, often from university research or company cooperations, prepares your Master's thesis in the fourth semester. It suits graduates in applied mathematics, applied physics, computer science or a related field who want to solve problems in engineering, consulting or finance.

Prerequisites

A BSc degree or equivalent in Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Computer Science, or a related field

Applicants who hold a Bachelor degree in mathematics, physics or computer science that is recognized by

the examination committee, are entitled to apply for in the Master's degree program "Mathematical

Modelling, Simulation, and Optimization". Moreover, applicants who have completed the Bachelor

degree program "Mathematical Modeling" at the University of Koblenz can apply for the Master

program.

Only candidates with a final grade of at least 2.5 (German grading system) in the Bachelor degree

program will be accepted; the examination committee will decide on exceptions on application.

Candidates can also enrol in the Master's degree program " Mathematical Modelling, Simulation, and

Optimization" if the official transcript of the Bachelor's examination has not yet been issued. However, all

examinations will have been taken before the start of the Master's degree program, and the examination

is likely to be awarded a grade of 2.5. If evidence of compliance with the admission requirements has not

been provided by the end of the first semester, any such enrollment will be considered null and void.

English language skills that are at least equivalent to Level B2 (equivalent to TOEFL of at least 72 points or IELTS of at least 5.5 points)

Complex, cross-linked systems pervade our daily life e.g. in natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, or logistics. The key to tackle the challenges imposed by these systems is mathematical modeling in a broad sense which is based on a advanced knowledge of • Mathematics • Physics • Computer Science It is highly recommended to pass the provided self-assessment test. This contains an absolute minimum of mathematical knowledge to successfully participate in our program
