About the programme

Scientific Computing at the University of Bayreuth is an international four-semester Master of Science in mathematics, taught in English, with starts in the winter or the summer semester. It covers the whole workflow of numerical simulation: building and analysing mathematical models, designing numerical methods and solution algorithms, statistical evaluation, optimisation, running algorithms on high-performance computers, and visualisation. Applications range from crash tests and electromagnetic compatibility to fuel cell optimisation, pricing financial derivatives and simulating biological processes. You start from a deep understanding of the mathematical core of a problem, get a wide overview of modern numerical methods for differential and integral equations and for analysing large amounts of data, and gain practical skills in high-performance computing. Internships and modelling seminars run with high-tech companies, and the course structure allows a fast track into doctoral research. It suits students working where mathematics, computer science and application fields meet.

Equivalency

Equivalency of the completed bachelor's degree is the responsibility of the board of examiners and is not determined conclusively until the application process is under way; for this reason, no information can be provided in advance; content-related requirements are specified in § 5 para 1 item b of the Examination Regulations (opens in a new tab)

Aptitude Assessment Process

One prerequisite for admission to the programme is the passing of an aptitude assessment process (see Examination Regulations (opens in a new tab), Annex 2); it includes an evaluation of the applicant's qualifications and, if necessary, a personal interview

Language Proficiency

ENGLISH (opens in a new tab): level B2

GERMAN (opens in a new tab): level A1

Applying Without a Degree Certificate

Applications may already be submitted before completion of the bachelor's degree; however, a total of at least 150 credits and a minimum grade of "1.9" are required by the time of application

Special Conditions

Conditional admission is possible; special conditions may comprise up to 10 credit points (see Examination Regulations (opens in a new tab) § 5 para 2)

Programme-specific documents

The following lists admission requirements according to the regulations for this degree programme:

1. A bachelor’s degree in mathematics, computer science, engineering science or physics (or a degree with equivalent content) and a final grade of 1,9 or better.

2. Sufficient specialized knowledge in Numerical Mathematics with at least 16 credits. Alternatively, 6 credits are sufficient if the missing 10 credits in numerical mathematics are made up in the first year.

3. Certification of proficiency in English at level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference of Languages. (For German applicants, the school-leaving certificate ("Abitur") is a sufficient proof of the required English language skills.)

Please include the following documents with your application:

1. A cover letter in English demonstrating the motivation of your application.

2. A bachelor’s degree certificate, transcript of records, and module descriptions of the study programmes, for which you claim the credits (German or English). Applicants who do not yet have completed their first degree at the time of preparing their applicationwill be considered if they submit the corresponding certificates by the end of the second semester.
