About the programme
The International Physics Studies Program (IPSP) is a research-focused, English-language Master of Science in physics at Leipzig University. It lasts two semesters with 60 credits and is meant for students who already hold a 240-credit bachelor's degree in physics, or a related degree accepted by the faculty. You gain advanced knowledge in the main fields of physics and specialise through physics electives, for example in soft-matter or solid-state physics, theoretical and mathematical physics, or applied physics, with modules from several Leipzig physics institutes and the Leibniz Institute of Surface Modification. A 15-credit specialisation phase is followed by a 45-credit research phase with a research internship and a 23-week master's thesis. You can start in the winter or summer semester.

Prerequisites
Two-year version (MSc Physics):
Bachelor's degree in physics with 180 ECTS points
sound knowledge of experimental physics and theoretical physics
One-year version (MSc IPSP):
Bachelor's degree in physics with 240 ECTS points
experimental physics: courses in solid state physics and soft matter of at least 5 ECTS each
theoretical physics: courses in quantum mechanics and statistical physics of at least 5 ECTS each
The program is divided into the one-year specialization phase, in which elective modules must be taken and elective modules can be taken, and a one-year research phase, in which a field of research is prepared within the two compulsory modules and the master's thesis is written on this basis. The courses are held in English.
The application procedure is described here: .
A certified knowledge of German is not required.
- A completed bachelor’s degree in physics with a total of 240 ECTS credit points.
- If the applicant has successfully completed a degree programme in a subject other than physics, the admission commission of the faculty decides on admission to the master's course International Physics Studies Program (IPSP). Admission is possible if the previous degree is related or similar in content to the Physics degree programme.
- Sound knowledge in experimental physics in the subject areas “Solid State Physics” and “Soft Matter Physics” as well as in theoretical physics in the subject areas “Quantum Mechanics” and “Statistical Physics” with a minimum of five credit points each.
- Knowledge of English at B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (or equivalent).
The faculty will check whether the above requirements have been met and then issue an official notification. This serves as proof that the candidate meets the relevant admission requirements.
