About the programme
Financial Mathematics (Finanzmathematik) at Kiel University (CAU) is a single-subject Master's of 4 semesters, or two years. Banks and other financial institutions rely more and more on complex mathematical models to manage financial products and assess serious risks, and financial mathematics provides the scientific basis for this. You work on a broad range of questions, from the basic structure of financial markets and the choice of a sound, consistent concept of risk to the valuation of specific financial products and the quantification of risk with numerical methods. The methodological focus is on stochastics, numerics, optimisation and analysis, taught at the Mathematical Seminar. Ideally you bring a Bachelor's in mathematics, but another quantitative degree such as physics or economics works if you have very solid maths foundations and can quickly fill gaps, for example in measure-theoretic probability.

Prerequisites
For the 1st semester: Start in the winter and summer semester (winter semester recommended).
The prerequisite for admission to the Master's degree programme is a completed Bachelor's degree in the relevant field or an equivalent degree.
Good reading skills (C1 according to CEF) in English
- Enjoyment of the analysis of complex issues
- Ability to concentrate on work
- Urge for clarity and self-criticism
- Good knowledge of mathematics
- Bachelor's degree (180 ECTS credit points) in mathematics with grade 3.0 or better, provided that contents, extent, and scientific level are comparable to BSc in Mathematics from Kiel University, or
- Bachelor's degree (180 ECTS credit points) in another subject with grade 2.5 or better, if at least 30 credit points are in analysis, linear algebra, probability theory, and statistics, again with grade 2.5 or better (If necessary, admission can be granted conditionally under the condition that students take additional Bachelor's courses in the first two semesters of the programme.)
- In any case, be aware that the mathematical level in the Master's programme in Mathematical Finance is very high. For an alternative Master's programme with a stronger focus on economics rather than mathematics, consider the Quantitative Finance programme: www.wiso.uni-kiel.de/de/studium/master/quant-fin (opens in a new tab)
