About the programme
Chemistry at Bielefeld University is a four-semester Master of Science worth 120 credit points, with starts in the winter or the summer semester. Following a 'Master by Research' approach, the content follows current research topics. You take courses in at least two focus areas of chemistry, and a limited number of courses from other maths and science subjects is open to you too. In several research placements and in your Master's thesis you research fairly independently in a set topic area, usually on interdisciplinary questions within a research group. You choose one of three profiles: synthesis, in inorganic and organic chemistry; physical chemistry, in physical and biophysical chemistry; or theory and computer applications, in theoretical chemistry, computational chemistry and theoretical chemical physics. Besides chemistry graduates, the theory profile also suits Bachelor's graduates in physics or natural science informatics.
