About the programme

The Master of Science in Molecular Systems Science and Engineering (MSSE) at Heidelberg University explores molecular systems through physics, chemistry, materials science and the molecular life sciences. It lasts four semesters, is taught in English, starts in the winter semester only and can also be studied part-time. In the first semester you choose three of five topics, such as energy conversion, molecular engineering, biomaterials or nanosystems, one of four specialisations, and the basics of data and project management. In the second semester you pick two final specialisation topics, learn lab methods in the Creative Science Lab and study technology transfer. The third semester is for lab rotations in host labs in Heidelberg or abroad, and the fourth is for the master's thesis. Graduates are prepared for research or development careers and for PhD programmes.

Specialization

In the first semester, students learn the basics of Molecular Systems Science by choosing three out of the five main topics: Energy Conversion Molecular Engineering Biomaterials Nanosystems Philosophy and Ethics in the Engineering Science They furthermore choose one of the four specializations: Specialization (Macro) Molecular Engineering Specialization Life Inspired Molecular Systems Specialization Physics of Functional Materials Specialization Physical and Biological Principles of Sensing
