For a Master's you send uni-assist your degree certificate and a complete transcript, plus your university's grading system so your grade can be converted. This English-taught M.Sc. (three semesters, 90 credits) needs a Bachelor's of seven semesters (210 credits) in engineering or natural sciences with an energy focus, or in geosciences with a focus such as geology, hydrogeology or geothermal energy, with an overall grade of 2.5 or better (or ECTS grade B). Graduates with 180 credits are admitted but must earn about 30 extra credits before the thesis. English at C1 is required. Grades from 2.6 to 2.9 can be accepted with a suitability assessment from a lecturer. It starts in summer and winter.

For a visa you generally need proof of about 11,904 euros for one year, for example in a blocked account. Bochum University of Applied Sciences suggests budgeting about 900 to 1,100 euros a month for living costs in Bochum and the Ruhr region.

Student residences are run mainly by the local student services organisation AKAFÖ, plus private providers such as Lenner's Hof next to the main campus and GreenStay. Demand is high before each semester, so start early, and never transfer money before you have seen a flat and signed a contract.
