- Pay
- Thesis unpaid, student job paid by TVöD scale
- Subject you study
- Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Microsystems Technology, Materials Science
What you'll do
- You research existing thermal switch concepts (e.g. gas-gap, magnetocaloric and superconducting switches) and systematically evaluate them for application requirements and feasibility.
- You numerically simulate the thermal behavior of promising concepts (FEM) and derive first design candidates for a miniaturized thermal switch.
- You identify critical processes or technology building blocks and build first prototypes to find solutions, which you characterize experimentally.
- You document your results in the master's thesis and present them in the research group.
What you need
- Student in a university degree (Bachelor/Master) in natural sciences (e.g. physics) or engineering (e.g. mechanical engineering, microsystems technology, materials science) or other degree programs relevant to the work
- Basic knowledge of thermodynamics and heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation)
- Willingness to learn numerical simulation methods (FEM); first experience with simulation tools (COMSOL, ANSYS, Python)
- Basic knowledge of microtechnology for MEMS systems
- Interest in conceptual work and building prototypes
- Knowledge of cryogenics or experience with cryogenic measurements (low-temperature physics, cryostats, vacuum systems) and in materials science, especially thermal and mechanical properties at low temperatures
- First programming experience (Python or MATLAB) for data analysis and simulation control
What you get
- DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality of all people.
- We encourage independent work and the individual development of our employees, personally and professionally.
- Numerous training and further education opportunities
- For outstanding results, there is the option of continued employment as a doctoral researcher.
